Dyer-Schererville Open House

The carpet is down. The wood has been refinished. The tile is grouted. The public is invited to the Dyer-Schererville Branch Library Open House on Saturday, June 4th from 10 a.m. until noon. Meet the staff, ask questions, enjoy the upgraded surroundings and have some refreshments. Everyone is welcome!

Child Safety Policy Now on Web

On May 27, 2010, the Board of Trustees of the Lake County Public Library adopted a Child Safety Policy. The complete text of this policy can be found at the url: http://www.lcplin.org/about/child-safety-policy.htm.

Links to the policy can be found on the About the Library page, as well as on the Kids page. Both the About & the Kids headings can be found near the top of most of the library's webpages.

The first paragraph explains the purpose behind the Child Safety Policy:
The Board of Trustees of Lake County Public Library has adopted the following policy in order to provide for the safety, comfort and welfare of patrons of all ages, and to provide an atmosphere conducive to study and the appropriate use of the library's services and facilities.

Computer Use Guidelines

We are updating the Computer Use Guidelines. You can see the updates here, now: http://www.lcplin.org/about/computer-use-guidelines.htm

These guidelines are always on the Library's website, www.lcplin.org. Click on About the Library and then under the heading of Computers, you'll see Computer Guidelines.

Anyone who uses the computers in any of the LCPL locations also will be seeing these guidelines as they log into the computers. The Guidelines are what you are clicking "Agree" to!

Visiting Central Library on Monday, March 22nd?

If you are planning a trip to Central Library in Merrillville on Monday March 22nd, beware of sewer work being done near the access road off of U.S. 30. The U.S. 30 entrance will not be available on Friday.

Please use the Taft Street entrances to the Library during construction. Central Library is open Mondays from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.

Our branches are either celebrating or anticipating the installation of Groovix. What's Groovix?

What's Groovix?!?
Groovix makes public access computing simple. Groovix is a software set up on LCPL's Web PCs. Currently you can use Web PCs powered by Groovix at the Central Library Computer Lab, Forty-First Avenue Branch and Lake Station-New Chicago Branch. By the start of Spring, you will see the new Groovix set up at all of our public web computers.

Just as with the "old" computers, you begin with your library card number (all 14-digits, no spaces) and your unique 4-digit personal identification number (PIN). Enter that info & your computer comes to life. If all computers are busy, use your library card number & PIN to reserve the next available computer.

The question comes up sometimes, especially if a patron is taking a computer class: Do you have Windows? Well, no, not on the new Groovix Web PCs. They are run on a Linux operating system.

Which version of Office do you have? The new Groovix Web PCs have the OpenOffice.org Productivity Suite. Quite similar to the Microsoft counterparts, we are finding that if you can use a Microsoft product, you will be able to manage OpenOffice programs. You will find programs that do word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and slide presentations.

How can I save my work? LCPL staff are quite happy to say that you can save your work to your usb stick, a floppy disk or on the desktop so you can email your work to yourself.

Can I print? Printing on Groovix is possible - and at some locations, you can even print in color! You will notice a new print dialogue box and another mouse click to send your files to the printer, but we will help you get used to this new method.

Help?!? Please, your questions are encouraged! Just as you are getting used to the new software, so are we. Please ask your questions! We will learn together!

Sign Up for Library Programs Online

Now Library Users can quickly & easily view & register for Library Programs using any computer! View the Multi-Branch Events by going to http://www.lcplin.org/calendar.htm.

Can't remember the link? See the Library's homepage at http://www.lcplin.org/ and look to the upper right corner where you'll see "Library Events". This "Library Events" link can be found in the same place on many of the Library's webpages.

Is the calendar too cluttered? You can click on and open the "Search Slider" and choose to see only programs from certain locations or you can choose to see certain types of events. Under Event Types, you can narrow your search by audience or by topic.

Some of the programs are underlined on the calendar and some are not. You can place your mouse over a program name, or hover with your mouse, and find out more details. Underlined programs are taking place in rooms with limited seating so we are asking for your help in registering for these popular programs. Click on the link--the program on the calendar--and you will see program details and as you scroll down, where you can sign up for the program.

As an added bonus, if you place an email address in your program registration, you will be emailed with details of the program you signed up for. Days before the event, you will also be reminded of the program coming up! How cool is that!

Our interactive calendar is new to us as it is to you. If you have questions, please let any library staff member know & we will be happy to assist you!

If You Open, They Will Come

With little outside announcement, Highland Branch Library has opened after being closed since March 2009 for renovations. Three hours after opening, the Branch Manager reports that there have been a steady stream of people coming in to check out their newly renovated home!

Staff at Highland report that some of the newly purchased furniture has yet to arrive and there is still some 'move-in chaos,' but otherwise things are going great!

Stay tuned for the announcement of when the Open House will be!

Improvement to Library Catalog

Try the link at the top of our pages to "Search the Library Catalog". You'll see a different starting page for your search. You can enter Key Words - those are the important words in the title, subject or author. As you look down the screen, you are able to indicate if you want books, CDs, etc. and then, if you only want items from your local branch, you are able to indicate your branch.
